Choices
Too Many?
You probably haven’t heard of this before, but your brain might just need a decision budget.

Here’s what this amounts to -
Every day, we make hundreds of decisions. From the mundane (what to wear) to the monumental (whether to take that job offer), these choices quietly drain our mental resources. But here's what most productivity gurus won't tell you: the goal isn't to optimize every decision – it's to identify which ones deserve your full cognitive bandwidth.
I discovered this the hard way last month. After spending 45 minutes debating which project management software to use, I was too mentally exhausted to tackle the actual strategic decisions about the project itself. That's when it hit me: we don't just need to make better decisions; we need to be more intentional about which decisions we make in the first place.
Here's what the research reveals: Decision fatigue isn't just about feeling tired – it fundamentally alters how we process choices. When our decision-making muscles are exhausted, we tend to either make impulsive choices or avoid deciding altogether. This explains why some of the most successful people wear the same outfit every day or eat the same breakfast. They're not being quirky – they're being strategic about their decision budget.
Here’s an experiment to try this week: Track every decision you make for just one day. You'll be shocked at how many choices you're processing on autopilot.
Then, ask yourself: Which of these decisions actually move the needle in my life? Which ones could I standardize or eliminate?
The real power move isn't making perfect decisions – it's choosing which choices deserve your attention. Start treating your decision-making capacity like the finite resource it is. Create systems for the small stuff so you can save your mental energy for the decisions that truly matter.
Because sometimes, the best decision you can make is choosing what not to decide about.
What decisions are you going to stop making this week?
Until next week,
Sue
P.S. If this resonated with you, I'd love to hear about one decision you're planning to automate or eliminate. Hit reply and let me know.
