The Courage To Question Your Certainties

Hello there and Happy Tuesday once again,
Now this may catch you a little off guard, but it’s certainly meant to make you ponder -
So let me ask you -
What if the biggest obstacle to your growth isn't what you don't know, but what you're certain you already know?
We all carry beliefs we've never questioned—about ourselves, others, and how the world works. These aren't just casual opinions but deeply-held certainties that feel like unchangeable truths. They show up in phrases like:
"That's just how I am." "This is just how things work." "People never change." "I've always been this way."
These certainties are comfortable. They create a sense of order and predictability. But they also build invisible walls around what we believe is possible.
The Price of Certainty
Every certainty has a price tag:
The person certain they're "just not creative" never discovers their unique form of creativity.
The one who "knows" meaningful work requires sacrifice misses opportunities for both impact and joy.
The one convinced that vulnerability leads to pain creates the very rejection they fear by keeping others at a distance.
From Certainty to Curiosity
Now let’s consider this -
What would happen if you approached one of your certainties with genuine curiosity instead?
Not to prove it wrong. Not to change it immediately. But simply to wonder: "What if there's another possibility here I haven't considered?"
This isn't about dismissing your experiences or wisdom. It's about recognizing that even our most valuable insights have boundaries.
Your Invitation
This week, I invite you to:
Notice when you use absolute language ("always," "never," "impossible")
Choose one certainty that might be limiting you
Get curious about it with a simple question: "What if this isn't entirely true?"
True growth rarely comes from adding more information to what we already believe. It comes from having the courage to question our most comfortable certainties.
To the freedom that comes with fewer absolutes,
Sue
Reflection Question: What's one certainty you hold that, if it weren't completely true, would open up new possibilities in your life?
