The Hidden Gold

Finding Purpose in Everyday Moments

Hey there,

I hope this Tuesday finds you well and moving towards those aspirations.

And in that bent I want to share with you today a little discovery that came upon me.

Last week I’m standing at the kitchen sink hands deep in soapy water, mind wandering between tomorrow's meetings and that podcast I hadn't finished, when I noticed the sunset through my kitchen window. Nothing spectacular—just soft orange light catching my car window in the driveway—but it stopped me cold.

For maybe thirty seconds, I just stood there watching. And in that small pause, I felt something shift. A little realization with huge implications came up for me.

The Pursuit That Exhausts Us

We're obsessed with purpose. We chase it through career changes, relationship milestones, and personal achievements. We read books about it, listen to experts explain it, and sometimes lie awake wondering if we're missing it.

But what if we're overthinking it?

What if purpose isn't always found in the big, life-altering decisions but in the quiet attention we bring to ordinary moments?

The Power of Noticing

I've been experimenting with something simple lately: just noticing. Not changing anything, not trying to optimize or improve—just paying attention to what's already happening.

Here's what I've discovered:

When I truly notice the taste of my morning coffee instead of gulping it down while scrolling, I experience genuine pleasure rather than just caffeine.

When I notice the subtle expressions on a loved on'e’s face during conversation, I feel more connected than when we've talked for hours while distracted.

When I notice the resistance I feel before starting work, I can address what's actually bothering me instead of procrastinating for mysterious reasons.

These aren't revolutionary insights. But they have the power to completely change how we experience our days.

Beyond Mindfulness Clichés

I know what you're thinking. "Great, another mindfulness lecture. Just be present. Got it."

But this isn't about meditation apps or breathing exercises (though those are valuable). It's about recognizing that purpose often reveals itself precisely when we stop hunting for it so aggressively.

Purpose lives in engagement—in the quality of attention we bring to what we're already doing.

Your Weekly Challenge

This week, I invite you to try a simple experiment:

Three times each day, stop whatever you're doing for just 30 seconds. Notice where you are, what's happening around you, and what you're feeling—without judgment or the need to change anything.

Don't set alarms or create a complicated system. Just pause when you remember to.

Then, at the end of the week, ask yourself: Did any of those moments reveal something meaningful that I might have missed otherwise?

I'd love to hear what you discover. Hit reply and let me know.

With Love and Gratitude Until Next Week,

Sue
